Employment Programs

One of the saddest statistics in the world today is the dismal 37% employment rate for people with disabilities. Pathways has made it a mission to lower this number by creating an employment training program that will prepare students of all abilities for the workforce. This program is different from many existing ones in that it ensures students pursue a career they are passionate about and can excel at.

There two basic employment tracks Pathways offers: 1) Retail and 2) Entrepreneurship.

Both tracks prepare students with an understanding of financial, customer service, work ethic, and employment readiness skills. They will learn about money, simulate real life situations, and practice learning how to socialize with colleagues, customers, and their employers.

Most importantly, Pathways is unique in that we use our “children teaching children” model in job training. We do not use adult job coaches but peers to work and train with the children throughout the training and job placement. Both students learn about employment together. Our outcomes have been better due the motivation being higher working alongside peers.

The peer job coaches also report they would strongly agree with hiring a person with special needs and report that after this experience they would feel comfortable modifying the work environment. Project Win Win is designed to prepare the next generation to include people with special needs and to change the expectations and perception. It is a win win proposition for everyone.

Students are expected to not only practice these skills in class, but work on them at home with their parents and families to ensure mastery and generalization. Parent involvement and acting as their advocates is key to helping any child achieve their model of success.

Entrepreneurship Track

The entrepreneurship program prepares students to start their own business in photography, video production, graphics, and disc jockey and music and entertainment. Students who work in the entrepreneurship tracks become an integral part of creating a business through Pathways. They work on making saleable products, and turning their works of art into a profitable business. All proceeds go back into making program improvements, purchasing more advanced technology, and creating even more opportunities for students to practice their skills. Some children have become employed by Pathways through this program and have reached independence where they do their own work outside of Pathways.
